In the fashion industry there is this horrible stigma of super thin girls. Although most find these girls repulsive, particularly in print, I do not think the general public understands the point to the size 0 model. I am not promoting body disorders or anything of that matter, but when a designer is debuting their F/W/S/ collection's it is a test subject to see how the clothing will be accepted by stylists, buyers, editors, etc. Making clothing is expensive, the more material the more costly. A smaller model makes it cheaper and requires less work to make the garment look good. Designers and magazine editors need to cater to their audience, so let's all face it--(INCLUDING MYSELF)-- Dolce & Gabanna did not create their collection with the "average" size woman in mind. This is business. You don't see Apple advertisements in impoverished neighborhoods, do you?
But when Glamour ran this photo in their latest issue, it got every major hollywood news buzzing. "OH MY GOD A NUDE WOMEN WITH ROLLS!" Some considered Lizzie Miller to be "Regular Size" while others "Plus Size". This really struck a nerve with me. To consider the average American woman a size 14 is false. In fact, most women I see fall someplace between a 6-10. The model featured in the magazine was, in fact regular size... 5'11 and a size 10 better be fucking regular size! I feel like everyone has become so use to seeing a frail thin models that whenever a normal size model appears there is some sort of huge fanfare about it. I have no problem with "Normal/Plus Size Models". For the most part they're more beautiful because they have to be that much better than a thin model in order to even be considered into the industry. But until there are actual designers willing to make clothes larger than a size 8 I don't see the point in getting the hopes up of millions of women. Magazines are meant to display clothing and designers and if a normal or "plus" size model cannot fit into the collection why would you put her in the editorial? It's false advertising. I'm not being cynical, nor am I a skinny bitch- I am the opposite. I'm 5'9" and a size 14/33. I am larger than all of my friends and wouldn't consider myself average size but at the same time, I've never been considered fat because my height distributes my weight. Finding pants is always a nightmare. If a dress has zip closure without stretch I usually just walk away because I feel like I will break it if I try it on. I know what it is like to not fit into clothes and how defeated you can feel. But there is also this sort of glory that I feel because I do not just settle on what fits. I search and search until I find something chic that works for my body. I don't complain about not being able to fit in an amazing Givenchy jacket because I understand the fashion industry, its standards, and it works. It sometimes pisses me off to walk into a store and see a bunch of amazing garments just sitting there and I think, "Wow, if they extended their sizes I would at least buy this". But it enrages me even more when I see a girl half my size wearing Ugg boots, a denim mini-skirt, wife beater, and puffy jacket with faux-fur lining around the hood when she can probably fit into anything she wants yet I, who cannot, look more chic.
